The Renaissance artist, Albrecht Durer has created some of the most
memorable portraits of Italian contemporaries. Unlike the flat and
often passionless works of his peers, Durer has instilled a realism that
goes beyond the delicate appearance of his subjects. This
representative portrait which shows a young Venetian in the early years
of the 16th century, projects a personality that makes her look as much
like someone living in the present. Her hair is parted in the center
and her face framed in feminine curls, while the background is muted in
order to bring her all the more into prominance. A master painter and
engraver, Durer produced many religious works, with special emphasis on
the Virgin and Child. He died in 1528 when he was only 56 years old.
