The curls of youth were sometimes added to the updo of middle age, with
the result that barely a single curl remained. In the roaring twenties
of almost a hundred years later, the bangs reflected the curl of youth.
The woman had to send an image of girlishness, when she was not able to
demonstrate much more. She could not show her shoulders or knees, and
all she had to add a bit of excitement to her image was what she could
accomplish with her hair. She was between wars now, so she could
partially come out of her shell, but just enough to excite a suitor and
be presentable for her husband.
